Knob Noster
Knob Noster is home to Whiteman AFB, home to the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. While in the Whiteman area you will become very familiar with the small town of Knob Noster. This town of approximately 2300 is only two miles away and offers the nearest opportunity for off-base shopping and restaurants. Though it seems small you will be surprised at the variety of merchants located in this town including several nationally known restaurants, gas stations, auto parts stores, banks, and numerous churches. Scattered amongst the well-known businesses are several small establishments ranging from a florist to several computer stores.The Knob Noster city government and the Chamber of Commerce have excellent ties with the base. www.knobnostergov.com WarrensburgLocated only ten miles from Whiteman is Warrensburg. This quaint college town (population approximately 17,000) offers a wide variety of activities and opportunities. It is the home of our nearest Wal-Mart (SuperCenter) and many fast food restaurants. You are sure to find what you are looking for with over 1,000 retailers available! Also located in Warrensburg is Western Missouri Medical Center which is the nearest full service hospital to Whiteman AFB. It is a fully accredited acute care hospital with a skilled nursing unit and also outpatient facilities. Its Emergency Center is used by Whiteman personnel. If continuing your college education is a top priority you will be pleased to find Central Missouri State University so conveniently located to Knob Noster and Whiteman AFB. It boasts an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students and is Warrensburg's largest employer. Warrensburg has approximately 30 churches offering services in a wide variety of denominations. Base personnel will appreciate the variety of housing available in Warrensburg. There are many rentals from apartments to large modern homes. Housing prices are very reasonable as well. Expect to pay between $85,000 - $180,000 for a new home and between $65,000 - $160,000 for a previously owned home. Recreation is abundant in Warrensburg. Enjoy the new community center which offers something for every member of the family. If nature is your idea of relaxation try Grover Park's picnic area, swimming pool, tennis and volleyball courts, and baseball diamonds. Another popular picnic spot is Pertle Springs which also boasts small fishing lakes, a swimming pool, biking trails, and golf course. Lions Lake is a 30-acre park where you can enjoy watching waterfowl and other wildlife. Travel about 18 miles to the West and find Powell Gardens. This botanical garden is a wonderful day trip for the family and offers nature lectures, trails, and a gift shop. SedaliaLocated twenty miles from Whiteman, Sedalia offers more variety for shopping and entertainment. This town of approximately 35,000 was declared the home of the annual Missouri State Fair in 1899. It is held in August and offers a special FREE military day. Sedalia is also hosts the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival. Historic Downtown Sedalia is a wonderful place to browse and shop for antiques. Sedalia's Bothwell Regional Health Center is convenient to the base. This 185-bed hospital, which opened in 1930, offers Emergency facilities and a variety of medical specialties. Nature lovers will enjoy the Katy Trail State Park. It marks the beginning of the longest rail-to-trail conversion path in the United States. Hiking and biking are enjoyed along the 233 mile trail. The State Fairgrounds also houses the State Fair Raceway which is used from May through September. Drivers from all around the country are drawn to the excellent track every Friday night. Shop for antiques or visit an Amish store. Stroll through Farrington Park and enjoy the paddle boats, canoes, or fishing. If you decide to make Windsor your home you will be pleasantly surprised by the peaceful atmosphere and the abundance of activities available for the family! The recreation program offers tennis lessons, swimming lessons, and ballgames for all ages. Windsor's school district is AAA rated and educates approximately 800 students. A Vocation-Technical School is available nearby. There are also classes for special needs students. CLINTON- Located approximately 40 minutes from Whiteman is the city of Clinton. It is a wonderful choice for families looking to settle in a friendly, reasonably priced community. Clinton offers a variety of restaurants and shopping opportunities for its 9,400 residents. Stroll through the historical downtown square which has been a center for merchants since the 1800s. It now hosts over 150 businesses; many whose store fronts have been restored to be reminiscent of the 1800s.Clinton's school district receives a AAA rating. This district is an example for many others in the area. Its locally developed curriculum has even been sold to many other districts in the State. The district also has a Vocational-Technical School offering ten full time programs and many more evening programs available to high school students and adults.Enjoy life with the variety of recreational activities. Boating and fishing are especially popular since Clinton is located on the Grand River Branch of Truman Lake. The area around the lake is a favorite for hunters. The Parks and Recreation Department maintain 120 acres of parkland besides offering numerous activities. KANSAS CITY- Considered the "heart of America", Kansas City is the closest 'large' city to Whiteman AFB. Whether it is shopping to do, your favorite restaurant to dine at, gambling at one of the many casinos, or catching a sporting event it is all a short drive from the base. Crown Center, River Market and the many fountains located in the central Kansas City add to the city's attractiveness. Swope Park, the second largest municipal park in the United States, houses a zoo, Imax theater, Starlight Theater, golf course, and picnic sites. Amusement park lovers will be pleased with trips to Worlds of Fun Theme Park and Oceans of Fun Water Park. Kansas City is definitely a blend of modern convenience and down-home friendliness. COLUMBIA- Located approximately 70 miles from Whiteman, Columbia is another great shopping and entertainment option. Despite its small town atmosphere it has many major shopping and eating establishments. It is also the home of the University of Missouri-Columbia. Just a short drive from Columbia is the Lake of the Ozarks (a 58,000 acre recreational area) and Arrow Rock (a historic frontier town on the Sante Fe Trail). SPRINGFIELD- Springfield is the third largest city in Missouri with a population of approximately 145,000. This city of country charm also offers a Mecca for outdoors lovers. Enjoy boating and fishing in one of four local and six regional lakes then camp in one of the many scenic areas. For animal lovers take a trip through the World's largest drive-through animal park! Appreciate the spectacular view inside one of many caverns in the area including the only cave big enough to drive through! ST. LOUIS- If you don't mind a longer drive St. Louis has a variety of things to see and do. The city of 2,500,000 is the home of Six Flags Over Mid-America and Raging Rivers Water Park. Younger children will enjoy a free trip to the St. Louis Zoo and to Grant's Farm (a small zoo and game preserve set on land previously owned by Ulysses S. Grant). The whole family will be amazed by the view from the Gateway Arch in the heart of St. Louis. Also worth stopping at are the Anheuser Busch Brewery and the Old Courthouse. L |
